Keith Wayne Osterman

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Keith Wayne Osterman, 67, who passed

away peacefully during his sleep on March 11, 2026, at his home in Mesquite, Nevada.

Keith was the kind of person that everyone should strive to be. He was of the highest character–

honest, kind, caring and giving to everyone. He was the best kind of friend, neighbor, colleague,

brother, parent, and husband anyone could have. Keith had an array of impressive talents. He

was an excellent cook, a skilled fabricator, and an incredible artist of ornate wood carvings,

horseshoe sculptures, and pencil drawings. He had even won a prize ribbon for a knitting

project he completed as a teen. He was a “go to man” for many things because he could do just

about everything and do it well. He greatly enjoyed making personal gifts for his loved ones, and

his art will be truly cherished for many years to come. Keith was incredibly generous with his

skills and talents and would offer a helping hand anytime anyone needed it.

Time spent with Keith was time spent feeling loved, supported, and valued.

Keith was born in Hannibal, Missouri on February 21, 1959, to parents Geraldine Osterman and

Marvin Eugene Wahl. He attended school in Goodland, Kansas, and after graduation, Keith

joined the Army. He was stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado, as an infantryman from 1979-1981,

and was honorably discharged in December 1982. Keith earned the Expert Marksmanship

Badge with the M-16 rifle and hand grenades and was also awarded the Expert Infantryman

Badge. For his exemplary service, Keith received the Army Commendation Medal in July of

1981.

From 1981 to 1984, Keith worked alongside his brothers Marvin, Skip, and Charlie for Petty-Ray

Geophysical, a division of Geosource Inc., as part of Crew 6104, where he conducted seismic

surveys to map subsurface structures for oil and gas exploration. He later worked as a fabricator

at the Naughton Power Plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming from 1986 to 1988. Keith then began a

career with Williams Engineering, where he served as an Operations Technician, Lead

Operator, Lead Mechanic, and Construction Inspector for over 30 years, retiring in 2019.

Throughout his career, Keith found fulfillment in hands-on work, problem-solving, and learning

new technologies, often working outdoors and building with his own two hands. Along the way,

he formed lasting friendships that he carried with him throughout his life.

In October 1993, Keith married Jane Marie Stofferahn, and became a bonus dad to her children,

Melissa Brown, Will Stofferahn, and Ranae Madurai, who he cared for as if they were his own

children. In 1999, Keith and Jane began caring for Ranae’s infant daughter, Serena Knippers,

who they later adopted in 2009, joining her officially as part of their family. Keith’s love for his

family showed up in quiet, steady ways–in the things he did without being asked, in the way he

was always there to offer support and advice. He taught his children practical things, like how to

use tools and change a tire, but more importantly, he taught them that they were strong enough

to handle life’s challenges with confidence. His love left a lasting mark on his children and

helped shape the capable people they are today. His children feel so grateful to have gotten to

call him their dad.

Keith’s life held both loss and love. After the passing of his wife, Jane, in January 2021, he

eventually met Shelly Marie Child, with whom he found an easy, genuine, and deeply

meaningful connection. Shelly and Keith first met for dinner and dancing at the Casa Blanca in

Mesquite, Nevada on January 22, 2022. Although he was a little shy at first, Keith quickly

impressed Shelly with one of his many unexpected talents—his skill on the dance floor. From

the two-step to the jitterbug, they moved together effortlessly, their chemistry and rhythm was

immediate. So much so, it surprised onlookers to learn they had only known each other acouple of hours. The two were then inseparable, going on endless adventures to festivals, car

shows, dinner cruises, camping trips, and SxS treks to ghost towns, mines, and petroglyphs.

After falling so effortlessly in love and fitting so seamlessly into each other's lives, Keith and

Shelly were married in Laughlin, Nevada on October 4, 2023. Keith’s love for Shelly was evident

in the ways he spoke about her to his friends and family, and in the ways he cared for her every

day. Their four years together were full of laughs and adventure and were filled with wonderfully

simple joys: sharing Keith’s delicious meals, holding hands on long walks, visiting with their

cherished family and friends, and working together to create art projects and impressive holiday

displays. Keith was loved and respected by Shelly’s children, Austin McPhail, Ashley Crist, and

Shane Frickey, who enjoyed his knowledge of guns, his love for the outdoors, and his artistic

talents. They were incredibly happy to have Keith join their lives, and the lives of their children,

and truly admired his character and the way that he loved their mother. Shelly and her children

cherished the time they had with Keith and, though it was not enough, they are deeply grateful

for every moment shared.

Keith was a beloved grandfather to all his grandkids—Skyler, Lexi, Kaylin, Makayla, Axel,

Ashton, Remington, Chris, Tyler, Jason, Bentley, Knox, and Valerie—who loved his calm,

playful nature and his adventurous spirit. He was there for them as a cheerleader, a playmate,

and a friend.

In returning home to the Lord, Keith is survived by his mother, Geraldine Osterman; his sister,

Debra Osterman and his younger brother, Clif “Skip” Osterman (Melody); his loving wife, Shelly

Marie Osterman, and her two children, Austin McPhail (Amanda, Bentley and Knox), Ashley

Crist (Jeffery and Valerie); his children Will Stofferahn (Deseriee, Skyler and Lexi), Melissa

Brown (Kaylin, Makayla, and Axel), Ranae Madurai (Chris, Tyler and Jason), and Serena

Knippers (Dillion, Ashton and Remington).

Keith is preceded in death by his late wife, Jane, his brothers Marvin and Charley Osterman,

and Shelly’s youngest son, Shane.

Keith Wayne Osterman was an incredibly talented, loving, and thoughtful husband, father,

brother, and friend, and he will be truly missed.
